Synchronous multiple primary lung neoplasia. Hamartoma as the primary tumor and lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract

The presence of multiple primary lung neoplasms is uncommon, with few series described in the literature. They can manifest synchronously or metachronously, with the latter being more common. The prognosis in patients with synchronous tumors appears to be more unfavorable than in patients with single lung neoplasms.

METHOD.

The research complied with ethical and bioethical principles and was carried out in accordance with ethical and moral considerations, as well as current regulations (Good Clinical Practices–GCP–requirements and adherence to ethical and bioethical principles originating in the Declaration of Helsinki and the Habeas Data Law). The patient provided informed consent, which included all information about the risks and benefits, as well as full autonomy to accept or reject the research and anonymity. The case was also approved by the bioethics committee.

CLINICAL CASE:

Patient with preoperative histopathological diagnosis of hamartoma-type lung neoplasm. Surgery was performed via right lower lobectomy using posterolateral thoracotomy (Sweet). The postoperative course was satisfactory, and the anatomopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis reported multiple primary pulmonary neoplasia, hamartoma, and adenocarcinoma as synchronous, with the two lesions being of different types.

CONCLUSION.

Multiple primary lung neoplasia is a rare form of presentation, as is hamartoma with focal acinar-type lung adenocarcinoma, which is sometimes difficult to diagnose and has a guarded prognosis.
