Wireless Retinal Implant Demonstrates Lasting Control for Geographic Atrophy

NEW ORLEANS — A study presented at a recent conference indicates that a wireless retinal implant has provided lasting control of geographic atrophy (GA) for as long as three years.

Visual Improvements Over Time

The study revealed an average improvement in visual acuity of -0.59 logMAR (approximately a gain of 30 letters) after 36 months with the PRIMA system. This marks a progression of about 5 letters compared to the results at the 12-month mark. Over 80% of patients were able to read letters, numbers, and words by the 12-month point, and by the 24 to 36-month interval, half of the patients were performing advanced tasks such as using a smartphone, reading menus, and playing cards. In the eye with the implant, vision remained stable, while the untreated eye experienced a decline of approximately 1.4 lines of vision.

Adverse Events and Safety Profile

According to Ehsan Rahimy, MD, of Stanford Medicine, serious adverse events (SAEs) like hypertony, retinal tear, macular hole, and subretinal hemorrhage were rare after the first six months and did not negatively impact natural vision.
