Patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression and suicidal thoughts exhibited notable symptomatic relief following a radiosurgical intervention targeting a specific brain pathway associated with mood regulation and obsessive-compulsive behaviors, according to findings from a small clinical trial.
Study Findings
Among the participants, suicidal thoughts resolved in 13 out of 14 patients. Additionally, the average depression symptom scores decreased by more than fifty percent across 18 patients who underwent radiosurgical capsulotomy. Remarkably, eleven patients achieved a reduction of 50% or more in their Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores. All but two out of 20 patients enrolled in the study demonstrated some degree of improvement from their baseline conditions. This positive effect was durable for most patients who were followed for a period exceeding one year.
Importantly, no patients experienced neurological deficits, cognitive deterioration, personality alterations, or complications such as hemorrhage or infections following the treatment, as reported by Dr. Mohamed Khattab from the University of South Florida in Tampa during a presentation at the American Society for Radiation Oncology meeting in Boston.
