Inhaled microplastics were frequently found lodged in people’s lungs, especially in individuals diagnosed with lung malignancies.
Study Overview
A prospective observational study involving 100 participants undergoing diagnostic bronchoscopy revealed that those with lung cancer had a higher frequency of microplastic particles detected through bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and airway tissue sampling (66% vs 46% in those without lung malignancy, P=0.044).
On average, cancer patients had one microplastic particle found in their BAL samples, compared to approximately none in the control group (P=0.045). The association between microplastic presence and lung malignancy remained significant even after adjusting for smoking exposure, age, and sex (OR 2.00, 95% CI 1.01-3.95), as stated by Ilias Dimeas, MD, from University College Dublin and the University of Thessaly, Greece.
Cautions and Future Research
Dimeas emphasized that while the study highlighted the increased presence of microplastics in lung cancer patients, it did not clarify the underlying reasons. Microplastics might contribute to inflammatory processes related to cancer, or diseased lungs may retain particles differently than healthy ones.
This finding opens avenues for further research. The team has initiated laboratory experiments to explore the specific types of plastics involved and their interactions with lung cells.
Microplastics in the Environment
Microplastics, resulting from mass industrial processes, have been increasingly detected in the air, water, soil, and food globally. They have raised concerns due to their infiltration into human tissues and potential links to various health issues, including cognitive disabilities and cardiovascular diseases.
Advice on Minimizing Exposure
Experts recommend several measures to reduce microplastic exposure, which include avoiding burning plastics, not using nonstick and plastic cookware, refraining from reheating or washing plastic containers in dishwashers, using aluminum foil instead of plastic wrap, choosing food and drinks in glass packaging, eliminating synthetic fabrics from the home, and avoiding tobacco smoke.
Limitations of the Study
The true health implications of microplastics remain poorly understood. Ria Devereux, PhD, from the University of East London, indicated that while this study is a vital preliminary investigation, it does not establish a causal link between microplastics and lung cancer. Limitations include the observational nature of the study and its small sample size.
Devereux also noted the need to consider other factors such as occupational exposures, air pollution, and the types and stages of lung cancer. Furthermore, the study cannot determine the duration of microplastic presence in the lungs or its origin, nor can it conclude whether microplastics existed prior to the development of lung disease.
Call for Clean Air
Barbara Hoffmann, MD, MPH, from the University of Düsseldorf, reiterated the importance of continued research on microplastics and lung cancer. She emphasized the fundamental human right to breathe clean air, which includes air free from microplastics.
Study Population and Findings
The study cohort consisted of 100 individuals, divided between those newly diagnosed with lung malignancy and controls undergoing bronchoscopy for non-chronic respiratory conditions. BAL sampling was performed on all participants, with paired airway tissue sampling conducted for half of the group.
Microplastics were detected in 70% of lung cancer patients and in 60% of samples collected. Those undergoing both BAL and tissue sampling showed significantly higher overall microplastic detection and total burden in patients with lung malignancy.
Interestingly, an inverse relationship was observed between BAL and tissue microplastic burdens in lung cancer patients, indicating potential compartment-specific pulmonary particle dynamics.
